High School Intercultural Leadership

Summer 2023

Overview

Designed for high school juniors and seniors, this 4-week summer seminar will build non-native English speakers’ English fluency and their intercultural awareness.  Understanding the basics of intercultural communications opens doors to live and study abroad, as well as to work effectively with foreigners at home. 

  • Engage with native English speakers to gain confidence using the language skills you already have
  • Practice listening
  • Strengthen English vocabulary
  • Identify differences in cultural values to manage communication
  • Connect with American peers
  • See Northern California and experience everyday life

Course Includes

  • Activities & Excursions: Experience Turlock and Northern California as we explore local destinations such as Downtown Turlock, Farmer’s Market, Carnegie Arts Center, Pageo Lavender Farms, Stanislaus County Fair, Yosemite National Park, Columbia State Park, Great Valley Museum, Tuolumne River Trail
  • Cultural Detective – Investigate a Pillar of Culture:  Together we will learn about some of the basic parts of culture
  • The Culture-Leadership Connection:  Work with classmates to identify pillars of culture in the real world and how understanding them can help you be successful
  • Meet with Stan State:  Spend a little time with high school and university students and learn about university life in Northern California

Housing

We have 2 options for housing while participating in this program. 

On-Campus Housing

Includes: 

  • Chaperone costsi – includes room & board, Health Center & Recreation Complex fees for chaperone(s) – 1 required per 15 students if living in on-campus housing
  • After hours/weekend activities
  • Meals except on out-of-town excursions

Homestay

Includes:

  • Ground transportation to and from airport
  • Meals except on out-of-town excursions
  • Chaperone could opt to stay on campus or for a homestay placement at above rates

Students without chaperones will need to use the homestay option.

Health Insurance

Stanislaus State requires all international students to carry health insurance that includes health, medical evacuation, and repatriation during their period of enrollment.  Please arrange for this and provide proof of insurance for all student participants.
